5th October - Louisville to Atlanta

We had an early start this morning, checked out of the hotel and our first stop was at the laundromat to do some washing!!  Then after a quick breakfast it was back on the road as today was a big day of driving. Our trip today took us from Louisville to Nashville to Lynchburg, with Atlanta being our final destination for the day.  Today we have driven about 451 miles or 728 kms. A big day with us not arriving in Atlanta until almost 8pm, but we had quite a few stops along the way.

Our first stop was on our way towards Nashville, after Wade spotted the sign for the National Corvette Museum, which was in a town called Bowling Green.  When he asked if we could stop, how could I say no (looking at Corvettes is not super high on my list of things to do in life, but let’s be honest I’m going to need some ammunition up my sleeve for all the shops I’ll drag him into over the next few weeks - over and over again)!  However, the museum was actually more interesting than I expected in the end (not necessarily for a good reason though)!  Earlier this year a sinkhole opened up under the museum and into the hole went eight of the corvettes on display.  Thankfully it happened early in the morning so no one was hurt, but of the eight cars that went in, they will only be able to restore three.  A couple of them were so badly damaged that they were almost unrecognisable.

After this, we headed toward Nashville, where we hit a bit of a traffic jam due to the NFL game that was on today.  We were going to stop in town and wander for a bit, but because of the game being on, parking in the main section of town was basically impossible.  Instead we drove across to Centennial Park where we were able to get a park and stretch our legs a bit.  At the park they have a replica of the Parthenon from Greece (which is a bit random!).

We then hit the road again, this time headed for Lynchburg, Tennessee and the Jack Daniel Distillery.  We did a guided tour here which was really interesting.  Whilst similar to the Maker’s Mark tour that we did, it was good to see the comparison. Lynchburg is actually a dry county (which means they can’t sell alcohol), but you are able to buy certain bottles from the distillery.  Wade bought a bottle of the Single Barrel Ducks Unlimited which you can only buy from the distillery (and with a little connection to Ducks!).  They also had an engraving service, so we had the bottle engraved as well (I think the plan is that it won’t ever be consumed!).  After the tour we headed into town (which wasn’t very far at all) and had a late lunch at the Barrelhouse BBQ (pulled pork sandwiches with a special spicy BBQ sauce and they were great)!  The staff we really friendly too!

From here, it was back on the road again for the last leg of the trip into Atlanta.
