Shanghai - 17 October 2011

A bit delayed on the post for this trip but better late than never :-)

Today was our first full day in Shanghai (after arriving the night before).

Mum and I had a wander around the hotel area after breakfast and were amazed at just how huge the city was, the number of cars and people out and about.

After that it was straight on the bus and we were driven out to Wuzhen. Wuzhen is a canal village about two hours outside of Shanghai (also known as the Venice of the East)! Here we wandered through the narrow streets and learnt about some of the traditions of the area and had our first real Chinese food (and survived)!

After lunch and some free time we got back on the bus and headed back into the city to the Chinese Museum (which was pretty boring)! Mum and I took this opportunity to head outside and wander around the area.

Before dinner we were taken to the French Concession (which was originally began as a settlement for the French in Shanghai). This was a really nice area that had been restored and had a lot of modern restaurants and coffee shops.

After dinner (local Chinese) we were taken on a Huangpu River cruise to see the city all lit up at night. The two sides of the river in Shanghai are very different, with the more modern side only being 20 years old.

Here are some pics from the first day:
