Shanghai - 18 October 2011

Our day started with a trip to a silk worm factory, where we were shown how the silk is extracted from the silk worms and turned into fabrics and doonas etc. Pretty crazy (and long) process and alot of it done by hand.

After this we headed to the Bund for a view in the daylight and were able to wander along the river for a while.

Next it was off to Yu Gardens. These were very old gardens established in the 1500's as a private garden, and are situated in the middle of the city. Definitely not the sort of gardens we would expect to see!

After making our way through the gardens we were given some free time to wander around the market area and then it was off to lunch. Today was more like a yum cha style lunch (one of the best so far)!

After lunch we were taken to the Jin Mao tower which was an 88 storey building that contains an observatory. The views from the observatory were amazing and really showed the size of Shanghai. One of the occupants of the building is the Grand Hyatt and from the observatory you can look down into the Piano Bar.

After this we were taken on a round trip on the MagLev (magnetic levitation) train which joins the airport with the city. The top speed is 431km/hour and it only takes 7 minutes to go 30kms!

After this we headed to Nanjing Rd for some shopping and free time (where we encountered a lot of beggars) and then off to dinner (funnily enough - it was Chinese on the menu)!!

Here are some pictures from today:
